Growing Bamboo in Seattle
If you are just getting started, it's easy to purchase bamboo starter plants in small quantities or full size, mature plants that will create an instant grove or screen.
For establishing a grove, larger plants are the best choice as the starter plants may take a decade to get to full height and breadth.
Bamboo is easy to grow, it likes water, a little grass fertilizer three times a year, good drainage, good light, and rich soil.
Once the bamboo is planted it will begin to send new shoots, smaller the first year, and each year they will grow taller with wider culms. Watching bamboo grow is a delight and it can grow many inches each day.
The topsoil should be at least 12" deep, the under soil should have good drainage but can be even a coarse gravel.
